What to Do When Someone Dies?

Immediately notify the deceased’s GP or the nearest hospital if the death occurs at home. A doctor/district nurse/police officer will confirm the death and assist with the information regarding the issue of a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD).

Register the death within 8 days, the registrar will contact you by telephone to do this. Have the MCCD and the deceased’s birth and marriage certificates ready (if applicable). The registrar will issue the Death Certificate and other necessary documents.

Notify family members, friends, and any other relevant parties. Consider contacting the deceased’s employer, insurance companies, and banks.

If the deceased left a will, contact the executor. If not, legal advice may be needed to manage the estate. This may involve applying for Confirmation (the Scottish equivalent of Probate).
